Dai.sy

The internet was, for many years, simply a series of people saying things where no one could reply (or simply a bunch of adverts). Things are better now with wiki use, comment systems and social sites like Digg and MySpace. Many sites are now set up to allow people to interact directly, and that's super.

However, for the sites that don't allow it or don't suit it, Dai.sy allows the visitors to add comments, ideas, suggestions, media and anything else they feel they want to say. Imagine that every page on the internet has a separate site where you can post comments about the page (or the site), share files that you think are relevant and have a chat room that is persistent. Not only that, but this is all done without censorship and without user accounts (therefore, anonymous). Completely free to use and out with the control of the website owners that the separate site is associated with, Dai.sy provides all this for anyone using Firefox (the best web browser there is in my opinion) as a plug-in.

I'm a big proponent of Greasemonkey as well. It's another Firefox plug-in that allows you to add your own javascript to any web page and have it run as part of the page. It allows you to add your own features to web pages. In some cases, you might even remove stuff (removing adverts from web pages is quite a common use of it). Basically, it also puts the power of browsing back into the users' hands again. The problem is that Greasemonkey is quite an advanced user thing. It's easy to use other people's Greasemonkey scripts, but writing your own can be tricky if you are not a programmer. Even then, it can be quite tricky. However, there are thousands of useful scripts ready to run.

But, the great thing about Dai.sy, is that it is really easy to use and also has that same sense of allowing the users control over the web, rather than simply have the rules dictated to them by web page creators. With these two plug-ins, along with the further evolving user centric websites, the web really is being taken back (much like the Firefox motto states).

The ease of web publishing and blogs has, of course, had a huge affect as well. Most people can now set up a very professional website very quickly and be able to update it with minimal hassle. The rise of distributed downloading has also been important for personal publishing. With systems like BitTorrent, people can now more easily handle large distribution downloading, without the normally associated distribution cost and high bandwidth.

I really think it is a great time to be alive and I hope that other people might feel the same. Sadly, the internet still isn't really anonymous, so 'freedom of speech' isn't entirely possible because people ultimately know they have to pay for what they say. True freedom can only really exist when there is no recompense. Of course, that tends to bring bad elements too, with people using the internet for more evil purposes as well as slander and general nastiness. Solutions like Tor and Freenet exist if you're interested in looking into that sort of thing. I'm sure it has its place. Especially in more restrictive countries such as China, where the internet is still not fully opened up to the people.

Though there may not currently be a page on my site that suits direct feedback, I'd greatly encourage my visitors to say anything they like in my Dai.sy pages (i.e., any page on my site, since every page on the internet has a Dai.sy page).

Have fun dudes!
