Links Page

I thought I should put up some links to some other stuff on the web. To be honest, there is not that much stuff that I feel strongly enough about to mention it here, so it's mainly other websites that I contribute to in some way or another. Oh well, more self promotion it is then. I'll try to put on links to other sites I find amusing or interesting as well.

Sites I'm involved in

(i.e. please sign the guestbooks on these sites)

www.glasgowstudent.net (Webmaster)
This is the University of Glasgow's student website which I used to run. It is basically an online handbook for our Students' Representative Council. But hey, I still used to run it, so take a look. :)

www.engeo.co.uk (Webmaster / Band Member)
This is our band website which I maintain. There is some really nice stuff up there and I do spend quite a lot of my time trying to come up with nice stuff for it [as oppossed to this website which is really just a blog which I've ripped off to put content on. Not that that's a bad thing, but the engeo site is where all my artistic creativity really goes when it comes to websites… meaning I do most of it myself, so have a look at that one too. Most importantly, have a look at the MP3s and tell us if you like our songs!

www.webgeeks.co.uk a.k.a 'gX' (Webmaster / Editor)
When I got the job running the student website at the University of Glasgow, the people who hired me suggested that the entertainment section on that site should be expanded somewhat: Possibly into a full blown publication. This all sounded a bit challenging to me, but I said ok. Unfortunately they failed to mention this to the people who took over from them. So I spent a good deal of the year trying to justify what I was doing when I didn't even want to do it in the first place. Anyway, enough moaning. I pulled the entertainment section off that site and turned it into a full blown publication. We still never launched… mainly due to the lack of content and a few bugs in the system (which I did eventually sort out). But you're welcome to go along, have a look at the system and tell me what you think of it! It's probably not up there any more, but it may return. There is a 'posterity' memorial site to gX here if you want to see roughly how it looked.

txtsqlmailbox.sf.net (Project Administrator / Webmaster)
The web page for my conversion of the Open Source web mail script, 'phpMailBox', to use txtSQL instead of MySQL.

Sites I like but have no involvement with

(i.e. sign the guestbooks if you like, but it's no skin off my back)

www.gutenberg.net
Project Gutenberg's homepage. Gutenberg was the name of the guy who invented the printing press and indirectly led to a huge advancement in the ability of man to progress forward as a race. This website, however, has a different purpose. It is a catalogue of free books that you can download and read. They are mainly classics since those are the books that are currently in the public domain and have no copyright owner. However, there are other free books there as well (such as the Hackers' Dictionary/Jargon File). This really is the sort of stuff the net should be about. I love it. I hear they are talking about digitising the Library Of Congress in America for free online access which might make Gutenberg a little unnecessary, but right now it's the coolest.

www.katerussell.tv
This is the website of TV Presenter Kate Russell who I just happen to like. Possibly because she's a little geeky and used to be a presenter on [.tv] (the computer channel) a good few years back. She works for the BBC now and occasionally Channel 4 and five. Anyway, she's been very nice to me over the years and she's a lovely person so have a look. Also, Kate's written a rather fantastic book which you can read there, so do that too!

www.jomango.co.uk
This is the website of the wonderful and talented Jo Mango. Jo is a singer/songwriter from Glasgow and has one of the most wonderful singing voices I have ever heard. She also has an uncanny talent for writing extremely good songs. Unfortunately I don't really think that much of her site, but I love her to bits and must spread the word. There is certainly enough information there for you to get started with.

www.ostg.com
This is the home of the Open Source Technology Group. If you don't know what Open Source is, you should really find out. It is possibly the most altruistic thing to have come out of the computer revolution. It is about the development of man and keeping information free - two things which I believe very strongly in. This is the home of many 'geeky' type sites such as sourceforge, thinkGeek, slashDot, FreshMeat and a few others. I really hope to contribute to this someday (when I have the appropriate skills) and I daresay you should at least know about the project, it will affect your life in some way! I guarantee it.

www.fsf.org
Before Open Source there was the Free Software Movement. The Free Software Foundation were the first to seriously attempt to make software that was open to the public. Their biggest goal being to make a complete operating system from scratch which they've very nearly done. You may have heard about the Operating System called 'Linux'. Although I use Linux a lot and love it, it has been falsely named. In truth, most of that operating system is part of the GNU project by the Free Software Foundation. The problem was that they had not made a Kernel to link all the componenets together. Linux however, fills that gap. So without the Linux program, there would not yet be a working operating system, but at the same time, most of what linux is, was made by the Free Software Foundation. If you're remotely into coding, you have to (at the very least) get the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC) as it truly has the BEST compilers I've ever used (and some of the fastest too now I believe - well it outstrips Microsoft Visual C++ at any rate).

www.scrapbook.me.uk
This is my mate Ally's website. It's a nice little mixture of tutorials, articles and rants. Actually, it's really just a personal website (like this one) but with the added feature of allowing people to put their own content on it. Although, in fairness, there are quite a few tutorials up there. It's a very swish website though so do have a look. Ally was the guy that got me into the whole Content Management System thing (updating websites without having to bugger about in FTP too much) and for that I am eternally grateful. - My first two versions of the gX website were done without it. I now see that this would have been near enough impossible to run. :-)

www.subcity.org
This is partly self-promotion again I'm afraid, but that's the way things go in a personal website. Subcity is a radio station in Glasgow. To be more precise it is the student radio station at the University of Glasgow (where I am currently a student). Anyway, it broadcasts all year on the internet and for one month a year on FM. I used to do a little show on it you see called DV8. It wasn't too bad either, I got about 3000+ listeners per show :-)

www.marv.co.uk
This is Marv's little blog site (like this one). Surprisingly arty content considering it's all text. Check it out.

txtsql.sf.net
txtSQL is an object-oriented (OOP) flat-file database management system written in PHP. Working on ordinary textfiles with increased file-security, it offers support for a small subset of SQL and is extremely efficient in terms of execution time. txtSQL utilizes a filesystem similar to that of MySQL by employing the concept of tables and databases. Furthermore, you do not require any outside plugins just so that txtSQL can operate. There are two levels of operation for developmental purposes; a low-level implementation and a high-level implementation that supports SQL. But most importantly, txtSQL is an opensource project licensed under the GNU which means that it is totally free of charge and will be like that forever. I just love this concept as I hate having to pay my MySQL subscription every few months. This is the first Open Source project I have ever donated money too - that's how much I like it.
